- * Word Search for Windows v1.3 Information *
-
- *IMPORTANT! Requires VBRUN300.DLL ...found at many ftp sites
- This file is often already in your WINDOWS/SYSTEM
- directory.
-
- Installation: unzip the WSFW1_3.ZIP file into its own directory.
-
- FILES IN THIS ARCHIVE:
- WSFW1_3.EXE -yup, the executable
- WORDLIST.FIL -yup, the list of words used
- PUZZLES.FIL -some sample puzzles
- README.1ST -this file!
-
- PLAYING: Pretty self-explanatory. REQUIRES A MOUSE.
- Just click on first and last letter of the word you
- found and it will highlight and then change colour.
- When you complete a puzzle, the hidden message is
- revealed! If you are playing a printed puzzle you may
- notice some extra letters at the end of the hidden
- message ... ignore these.
-
- Occasionally (about 1 in 10 puzzles):
- Some words have letters with brackets around them.
- The letters in brackets do not change colour when you
- find the word on screen. If playing a printed puzzle, you
- should not circle the bracketed letter. Since these words
- are duplicates, you may not be able to decide which word
- is which when playing a printed puzzle. This can make
- it challenging to find the solution to the hidden message.
- You may prefer to not print puzzles with words that
- have brackets.
-
- **NOTE**
- If you are IMPATIENT, OPEN a saved puzzle INSTEAD OF CREATING
- A NEW ONE! Puzzles OPEN ultra-fast compared to creating a new one.
-
- WARNING: It can take 3-4min (on a 486) to create a new puzzle.
- It is likely that this will slow down your system,
- BUT ONLY while the puzzle is being created. Once
- the puzzle is created, CPU usage is minimal (just as a
- solitaire replacement should be).
-
- FILE MENU: For OPENing (loading), SAVEing, DELETEing and
- PRINTing puzzles.
-
- All the saved puzzles are stored in a database file
- called PUZZLES.FIL.
-
- SAVED puzzles are saved in the state of play they are in
- when saved. (This lets you pick up where you left off
- if you don't finish playing). If you want to keep the
- original unplayed version of a puzzle, then save the
- partially-played version using a different name. Note that
- a completed puzzle cannot be saved (what's the point?).
-
- Sorry, but puzzles can only be deleted one at a time.
-
- PRINTING: If you have problems printing, e-mail me. You may need to
- experiment a bit to get the right font and size. A simple font
- such as Courier 10pt produces the most predictable results
- and almost always prints on a single 8.5 x 11in page. Not all
- printers will support the grid lines, so you may need to print
- without them. If you choose an unusually large-style font and
- 12pt size, you may need to use 8.5 x 14in paper or else accept
- some of the word list printing on a second page. All printed
- puzzles appear unplayed in this version.
-
- ALL PRINTING is to the WINDOWS DEFAULT PRINTER !
-
-
- COPY MENU: COPIES TO THE CLIPBOARD.
- For copying letters and words to be pasted into your word
- processor. The letters are copied as tabular columns (that
- is, the letters are separated by tabs, with each row ending
- with a hard-return). You will probably need to adjust your
- tab-stops for the letter grid to look right. Some word pro-
- cessors let you paste such a grid directly into a table, others
- enable you to convert the tabular columns into a table.
-
- You can also copy the letters separated by spaces instead of
- tabs, if you wish.
-
- Words are copied as one long column. You will need to use
- your word processor to format this to your liking.
-
- You must copy the letters and the words separately, and paste
- each separately to wherever you are pasting to. This is an extra
- step, but allows you the flexibility to paste the letters and words
- where and how you wish. Most Windows 3.1 users understand
- the concept of copy/paste operations, so I will avoid providing
- lessons here. Suffice it to say, that to copy a complete puzzle
- to your word processor, you will need to:
- 1. In WordSearch, choose Copy Letters.
- 2. Go to word processor; Paste letters into document
- 3. In WordSearch, choose Copy Words.
- 4. Go to word processor; Paste words into document
-
- SPECIAL MENU:
- MULTIPLE CREATE allows you to create and save a number
- of unique puzzles one after the other AUTOMATICALLY
- while you sleep or whatever. Puzzles are saved right
- after they are created, so if you stop the process half-
- way through creating 10 puzzles, you will still find the
- five that were sucessfully created in the puzzle file.
-
- OPTIONS MENU:
- Allows you to change the colour of the letters of found words.
-
-
- Interesting factoids:
-
- The word list was created by a mini-program I wrote
- which searched the collected works of Conan Doyle
- (thanks to the Gutenberg Project) for unique words...so
- there are some uncommon words you may not recognize.
-
- The "messages" were painstakingly compiled by hand and
- there are 375 different ones chosen at random each time.
- Most of these "messages" are quotes from famous people
- or "old sayings". I buried these in the executable so
- that you wouldn't be tempted to "read ahead" and spoil
- the effect. Unfortunately, I could not include some of my
- favourite aphorisms and famous quotes because they were
- too long.
-
- Version info: Version 1.2 corrected some flaws in the puzzle generation
- code that allowed randomly generated duplicate words to
- muck up some puzzles. It attempted to fix most of the print
- problems from version 1.0 and it added a copy feature for
- copying puzzles into your favourite word processor.
-
- Version 1.3 finally improves printing reliability; most users
- should have no problems. I added the ability to pick some
- other colours for those users who complained about my
- choice of blue for the found words.
